Mr. Tomarchio describes his lecture: “This lecture is inspired by the Letter to the Hebrews as a theological tour de force. Hebrews transfigures the brutal Roman execution of Jesus into the perfect Mosaic sacrifice. The Author brings Mosaic sacrificial ritual to bear in detail on the crucifixion of Jesus, to reveal it as the quintessential offering to God that accomplishes once and for all the human intentions of all ritual sacrifice. The lecture looks at sacrifice in Genesis and in the Law of Moses to elucidate its use in the Letter to the Hebrews to sacralize the crucifixion of Jesus. This account of that death as a sacrifice has inspired much of the ritual of Christian celebration of it, which has sacramentalized Mosaic sacrifice ritual. The ulterior intention of the lecture is to elucidate these sacramental forms of Christ’s sacrifice.”
