Title

What's Wrong with History?

Description

Typescript of a lecture delivered on September 27, 2024, by Annapolis tutor Zena Hitz as part of the Formal Lecture Series.

Ms. Hitz offers this description of her lecture: “In a St. John's seminar, we do not approach the readings historically, that is, ‘in a context.’ Instead, we ask them questions, as we might ask living people questions, and engage them in conversation and shared inquiry. Is this simply the way we prefer to read? Or is something wrong with a historical approach to a great book? If so, what?”
