The Way of All Flesh: Mortality and Transfiguration in Bach's Funeral Cantata

Title

The Way of All Flesh: Mortality and Transfiguration in Bach's Funeral Cantata

Description

Audio recording of a lecture given by Nathan Shields on October 11, 2024 as part of the Dean's Lecture & Concert Series. The Dean's Office has provided this description of the event: "J.S. Bach's Funeral Cantata, Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit—'God's time is the very best time,' also known as the Actus Tragicus—is a stunning meditation on mortality, by turns hopeful and despairing, composed by a man not yet twenty-four. In this lecture, Santa Fe tutor Nathan Shields will discuss the cantata as a cultural document, a work of art, and an existential confrontation. We will examine its relationship to the intellectual and religious life of 18th-century Germany; explore the rapture and haunting austerity of Bach's music; and consider the cantata as a vision of—and an attempt to come to terms with—the human condition."
