Description
Students playing broom ball on back campus during the first Real Olympics, St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, June 1955
An article in the Evening Capital (June 7, 1955) describes the game: "Recalling some of the lost glory of St. John's national lacrosse championships, a broom ball game--a sort of bumbling form of field hockey--enlisted the efforts of the students. As exhaustion overcame the men, the women--Betty Farrell and Shirley Moffett--grabbed the fallen brooms and carried on. Finally the juniors, led by ringer Hugh McKay, triumphed in a sudden playoff."
