JANUARY 18. 1946 Friday Lecture 1 The promise of Dean Buchanan in his Friday lecture was a description of the passage through the three discipline& of the military, civil. and academic w.otld and to explain what it feels like and means. Ks·a poetiC image furnishing "the epitome of the changing h\lman being," the dean sugg_ested the . wanderings of Ulysses in the Odyssey, and especially the leading theme of nostalg_ia. Nostalgia the minor of a man searching in his memory, seeking for something unattained. Ulysses' odyssey is the record of this search, and'' his successive exploits like the real and differentiated changes from world to world. The end of the story leaves us wondering whether there is not one definitive and final world which will be the real satisfaction of all search. is The three disciplines are three worlds and, just in Ulysses' experiences, great things happen in passing through them. The disciplines are stages of learning, and it is possible to pass from one to another without a complete comprehension of each. The dean chose as a kind of loose thread in his analysis of the three disciplines, Caesar's triple division of Saul according to language, law, and mode of life. The language of the military world is the language of obeying and giving commands. The intent of this language is one of immediate action and not of understanding. It requires a pliable and slave-like attitude of the will toward the irrationality of. obeying unintelligible command. As this is not a_.. tolerable language to live under there is the r.esultant of another talk- the soldier language of pornography and scatology. This talk takes the curse from the first and exercises the derils,arising from the impossibility of being commanded the irrational. It is a language of comedy, allowing an escape and view of situation from . the outside. When Price: 10¢ human beings break through this world they see it as a large pattern of ritual-the ritual of the ' irrational. The end of this discipline is war, and war 1s destination, the breakdown of reason. The high and remote intent is peace. However, to confuse these ends, which are precisely opposed as the rational and irrational, is disastrous and can produce the most complicated confusion. A virtue of this world is. its ability to often preserve itself when other worlds ,:ollapse-a strength seen to arise from the unifying nature of the system itself. In the civil world the language of command and obey has become the language of persuasion. This is the familiar talk of every day life, reaching as high as the formal pleading in a supreme court legal case, and as low as back fence gossip. The importance of this language is that eventually it leads to deliberation and decision. We have an example of this in the current situation with the Naval Academy. It is promised that some day from the multitude of negotiations on both sides definite decision will be reached. Civil laws are made by the citizens, for them to obey and to disobey when evil or injurious. The laws ask us to study, understand, and improve them to the end of approaching closer to the ideal of true Jbstice. The end of the Civil discipline is political liberty- a liberty so that all the powers in the human soul can be realized. This is the meaning of Roosevelt's familiar ideal of more abundant living, and also of the dictum of Aristotle that the state exists for the good life. The state must provide the means for a man to do all his conscience tells him he should do. The good state which has political freedom encourages men to accept responsibilities, and it sees that the ordinary processes of human industry furnish means of learning. �Page 2 ST. JOHN'S The academic discipline from earliest times was recognized as distinct and apart from the civil world. It has been given special privileges by the civil world, and is governed by its own language, law, and custom. Academic mode of life is a denomination of freedom- the freedom of the student to learn, to question, and to follow his idle curiosity. The function of the teacher in relation to the student is to question him in order to excite imagination and remove irrational prejudices and other matter impeding the process of real understanding. Faithful adherence to academic custom enables the student to attain the end of this discipline which is truth and knowledge of self, and gives him answer to Ulysses' question of the ultimate world. Academic language is complicated and symbolic. Its laws- the laws of the liberal arts in searching the world for truth. Legislation contrary to civil discipline is personal, each man making laws for himself according to his vision of truth. At the close of the lecture, questioning the significance of the three disciplines, the dean made the expected and welcome application to the liberal arts- the military discipline directed to grammar, the civil to rhetoric, and the academic to high dialectic. Grammar is built on syntax, and syntax is from a Greek term meaning the ordering and marshalling of armies . Rhetoric communicates, orders and moves things. And the function of logic is the inquiring and discovery of truth . The disciplines are liberal because to be free is to direct and rule oneself, and that is what men are doing through the action of reason in the three disciplines of common life. The dean further implied that the correspondence of the liberal arts to the three disciplines exists also in a similarity of processes, and that just as the practice of the dialect ical arts assumes the other two, so then would follow some inclusion of the grammar of military life and rhetoric of civil life in the dialectic of academic life. (An analogical illustration would be found in the relation of grammar , rhetoric and dialectic to Donte's Vinta Nuova , Convinio and Divine Comedy, and again the subsumption of grammar and rhetoric into the dialectic of the Comedy in the dimension of Hell and Purgatory.) COLLEGIAN Buchanan on Labor Although the Dean prefaced his remarks with the statement that he was not speaking as an· authority on labor, that he was only giving us an introduction to the subject, that he was not offering a .solution to the problem, that he was merely bringing us up to what the ordinary fellow knows about labor, he nevertheless went on to "estabii~h"~'. ~ historical law, to give an analysis of the development of capitalism, .and of the concomitant degradation of the workingman, to give an · exemplification of the Marxian theory of value, and 'to offer a solution to the " labor problem.' ' Labor p.i:oblems become acute after every war. This can be seen after the Napoleonic Wars, after our Civil War, when the British cotton workers, who were heavily involved, went on strike, and after the first World W ar, when most of the industrial countries had serious labor troubles, especially after the Russian Revolution , the " atomic bomb" of that age, hit man like a bombshell and effected him with hope and fear-mostly fear. We cannot make any real judgments yet on the October ~evolu tion- it is still continuing. (This reminds us of Trotsky 's " Theory of Permanent Revolution." ) However, we can say that the Russians are setting up conditions for learning faster than we are. The Dean concluded his talk with the statement that until we have settled the labor problem we should not talk so glibly about "worl~ federation. " (Your reporter would prefer to say that until we have " settled the labor pro?lem," i.e., until the working people who bmlt the machines, the factori.es, the railroads, etc., are in control of them, untii labor has organized a planned economy and discarded the anarchy th~t prevails in the pr esen~ : economic system, until this planned economy ._ has .· brought about that super-abundance of materif!l goods which is now possible, we should not t~l.k: glibly either of " real democracy, " or " ending depressions," or " preventing wars," or "world· federation.")
