POETRY READING Tuesday, March 9, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe Public Library Community Room Admission is free Charles Fasanaro, St. John's College tutor, will read from his recently published book of poems, Velocities of Rage. In the late 1960s, Dr. Fasanaro interrupted his studies in chemistry to train dogs to detect trip wires and land mines. After teaching these methods to the 25th Infantry Division, 60th Infantry Platoon, he requested to be sent with these men to Vietnam where he served with both army and marine units. The poems in the collection are the fruit of this experience. Since the Vietnam War, Fasanaro has counseled soldiers and lectures on both compassion and military ethics. Influenced by the dynamic environment and cultures of the region, her earlier art focused on bright colors and landscape imagery. Over the past seven years, Ms. Harvey has shifted the focus of her work away from "the horizon and the pretty colors" to more personal explorations of form, texture, line and color. This mixed media exhibit will be her first in New Mexico since 1986. The show continues through February 26. In his first show in the 1940s critics compared the style and brilliance of his work to that of Sargent. Stylistically, he is largely inspired by impressionism yet his work retains a distinct individual character. Thirty-seven recent oil on canvas "Pince du Form " by Stokely Webster works will be shown, including European landscapes, still lifes and a self-portrait. Webster's work is exhibited in museums and galleries nationwide and in Europe. Winding through some of Santa Fe's most beautiful countryside, the trail offers beautiful surroundings and a panorama of mountains and desert. The trail begins at the east end of St. John's upper parking lot, directly to the left after entering the college off Camino Cruz Blanca. " For nearly a quarter of a century, St. John's College has operated a campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one of the oldest cities in the New World. The College has received national recognition for its Great Books curriculum, a program deeply committed to the classics of Western thought, the arts of dialogue and the rigors of reason. Over the years that program has covered the works of some major Jewish writers and thinkers - from the texts of the Old Testament to the novels of Jtafka, explorations programs, St. of Jewish from the philosophy of Maimonides to Freud's into human behavior. John's College & Megavision The Glasnost Film Festival is a festival of new Soviet cinema highlighting documentary films to be shown throughout the United states in April and May 1989. The Festival is designed to give international recognition to Soviet directors whose recent work exemplifies an honest, complete, and candid approach to the Soviet present. The Festival will also inform American audiences about the changes occurring in the USSR and encourage understanding between our two countries through documentary film. On April 15th and 16th, St. John's College, in cooperation with Megavision, will be hosting the Glasnost Film Festival. Four Soviet filmmakers will show and discuss documentary films in four two-hour sessions over two days. Each session will show a different set of films beginning at 12:00 Noon and 3:00 PM on each day. Admission is $5 per session or $15 for an all-session ticket ($3/$10 for St. John's students). All showings will be held in The Great Hall with a maximum capacity for 220 people per showing. Film titles and more information will be available in the April calendar.
