King William's School flourished until the Revolution, hen, according to tradition, its building became a gunshop. , 1784 the Legislature granted the charter for St. John's .• allege; in the following year an act was passed which trans·. rred the masters, students and funds of King William's chool to St. John's. The College has, therefore, a tradition aching back to the earliest colonial times. The General Assembly wrote into the charter of the Colge the principles of freedom which, from her first begin"ngs, have earned for Maryland the name of the Land of ctuary. WHEREAS, institutions for the liberal education of youth in the principles of virtue, knowledge and useful literature are of the highest benefit to society, in order to train up and perpetuate a succession of able and honest men for afJcharging the various offices and duties of life, both civil and religious, with usefulness and reputation, and such institutions of learning have accordingly been promoted and encouraged by the wisest and best regulated States. II. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, that a college or general seminary of learning, by the name of Saint John's, be established on the Western Shore, upon the following fundamental and inviolable pri~ciples, namely : first, the said college shall be founded and maintained forever upon a most liberal plan, for the benefit of youth of every religious denomination, who shall be freely admitted to equal privileges and advantages of education, and to all the literary honors of the college, according to their merit, without requiring or enforcing any religious or civil test, or urging their attendance upon any particular religious worship or I' �21 CATALOGUE OF ST. The years since his presidency are chiefly marked by the long and successful administration of Dr. Thoma! Fell, inaugurated in 1886. Dr. Fell, now President Emeritus, retired in 1923, after thirtyseven years of service to the college. His succes,sor, President Enoch Barton Garey, is a St. John's man of the class of 1903. The presidents of the college, with the dates of their services, follow : President Washington visited the college in 1791. After his visit he addressed this letter to the faculty the college : •.. of·~ To the Faculty of St. John's College: Gentlemen:-The satisfaction which I have derived from my visit to your infant seminary is expressed with. much pleasure, and my wishes for its progress to perfection are proffered with sincere regard. The very promising appearance of its infancy must fl~tter all its friends (with whom I entreat you to class me) with the hope of an early and at the same time a mature manhood. . . You will do justice to the sentiments which your kind regard toward myself inspires, by believing that I reciprocate the good wishes contained in your address, and I sincerely hope the excellence of your seminary will be manifested in the morals and science of the youth who are favored with your care. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence, Charles : Carroll of Carrollton, Samuel Chase and 'J;'homas Stone, , served as trustees in the early days of St. John's, as did also . John Eager Howard. A fourth signer, William Paca, was ,, among the petitioners for the college charter. Francis Scott 1 Key was graduated from St. John's in 1796 and Reverdy • Johnson, Ambassador to Great Britain, in 1812. Founded at a time when politics were uppermost in men's minds, the college was, until the Civil War, a training school for many who were prominent in State and national affairs. During the Civil War, St. John'! was used as a Union; Army hospital. At the close of the war Dr. Henry Barnard,; later United States Commissioner of Education, accepted the presidency. Dr. Enoch Barton Garey, 1923- THE PURPOSE OF THE COLLEGE St. John's is a non-sectarian college for men. The enrollment is limited. The purpose of St. John's is the purpose expressed in the charter of King William's Schooleducation of youth in "good letters and manners." To this end attention is directed upon liberal arts and sciences leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Realizing that professional schools are demanding well-grounded men, St. John's prepares for further study such students as intend to continue their special training after graduation. President Garey stated the purpose of the college in his inaugural address: "Our effort will be to awaken our students to the questions common to all intelligent men-the problems of science, of history, of philosophy, of literature; then to develop an orderly habit of mind, an open-minded, analytical, appreciative power; to have both teacher and student feel comradeship in the enterprise of understanding human experi- �CATALOGUE OF ST. To this old college will conie boys, who must be graduated from it as men; men made aware of the obligations and beauties of life; men trained to be critically alert and intellectually fearless; men who have learned to live honorably, courteously and serviceably with their fellowmen ; men who have been initiated into an understanding of the truth that makes men free." In 1781 French forces under Rochambeau camped in Annapolis on their way to Yorktown. A memorial was erected in 1911 to perpetuate the memory of the soldiers and sailors who were buried on the campus. 22 LOCATION St. John's College is situated on a campus of thirty acres in the city of Annapolis. This 'beautiful town, so rich in tradition and in fine buildings two hundred years old, is unique in America for the way in which it has preserved the flavor of American Colonial culture. Built at the mouth of the Severn river, a mile from Chesapeake bay, the capital of Maryland and the site of the United States Naval Academy, it is within an hour's ride of Washington or Baltimore. Both of these cities offer every educational resource to the student at St. John's. The departments of the National Government, the museums, the lfbraries and the art galleries of the one, the musical and intellectual advantages of the other are easily available and of the greatest service. Annapolis is in close touch with the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Ferry and bus connect the city with points across the bay and Southern Maryland on the mainland. CAMPUS, BUILDINGS AND EQUIPMENT On the St. John's campus are many reminders of the early history of Maryland. The most ancient of the old trees is the Liberty Tulip-poplar,* under which the colonists concluded in 1652 a treaty of peace with the Susquehannock Indians. During the troubled days before the Revolution, the patriots gathered there to discuss their wrongs. The Annapolitans assembled there to greet General Lafayette in 1824. A dinner and ball in his honor were later given in the present chapel of the college. *This tree has been preserved and marked through the efforts of the Peggy Stewart Tea Party (Annapolis) Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 23 '~" McDowell Hall, the centra1~building, was begun in 1744 by Thomas Bladen as the Governor's Palace. Taken over by the college in 1785, it now includes the Chapel, the office of the President, classrooms, laboratories and the Carnegie Art Room. The latter contains a fine collection of books, prints, photographs and textiles given to the college by the Carnegie Foundation in 1926. Woodward Hall, the college library, houses more than sixteen thousand volumes, the nucleus of a rapidly growing collection that already contains many valuable books. Of great historical interest are four hundred books surviving from the gift made by Wi11iam the Third in 1696 to the Maryland clergy. They were early placed in the care of King William's School and were a part of the school's property transferred to St. John's in 1785. The Matthias Hammond House (also known as the Harwood House) was built during the years 1770 to 1774 and was bought by the college in 1926. It is an unsurpassed example of southern Georgian architecture. The college, with the help of friends, including historical and patriotic societies, is refurnishing the house much as it was in 1774. As the foremost museum of colonial art in Maryland, it is now open to the general public and to students of American history and the fine arts. The Brice House (1740), the Pinkney and the Peggy Stewart Houses, other distinguished examples of pre-Revolution buildings, are also recent additions to the college property. Well-equipped and thoroughly modern chemical, physical and biological laboratories are housed in Woodward and McDowell Halls. The Gymnasium, built in 1910, is completely equipped, with a maximum size basketball floor, handball and squash �~I 24 CATALOGUE OF ST. For intramural and varsity sports the college has football, baseball, soccer and lacrosse fields and ten·nis courts. There are three dormitories on the campus, Randall, Pinkney and Humphreys Halls, in addition to the fraternity houses which are owned by the college. Randall Hall contains the college dining room. THE DEGREE The college offers the degree of Bachelor of Arts. This degree includes the work formerly covered by the degree of Bachelor of Science and is accepted by institutions of advanced learning wherever the latter degree was formerly required. PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION Though primarily a college of the Liberal Arts, St. John's prepares its graduates to enter professional schools. Its degree is accepted by these institutions and in many cases is approved for advanced standing. For those who are interested in professional preparation the . following information is offered. Medicine: Students wishing to study medicine are given special attention at St. John's. Although a two-year premedical course is offered which will fit the student for admis:aion to some schools of medicine, the student is strongly advised to spend at least three and preferably four years in p.repa~·ation. The best medical schools require a bachelor's degree for admission. Under the supervision of a faculty adviser, the pre-medical student pursues special courses in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Psychology and Modern Languages, selecting a major in one of the laboratory sciences. Based upon the success of his pre-medical. work, an application is made in his senior year for admission to the medical school of his choice. The degree from St. John's is recognized by the best medical schools of the country and the graduate who has maintained the necessary scholastic standard may expect to be admi.tted to any of these schools. JOHN'S COLLEGE. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION Application for admission should be filed by every candidate by May first. A complete transcript of the subjects offered for admission should be submitted before September first by the principal of the last school attended. At the same time every candidate must present two testimonials of good character, one of which should be from his school principal. Methods of Admission: Students may enter by certificate, by examination, by a combination of both when the units offered are insufficient, or as special students. General Requirements: The general requirement for admission is a high school education, including the standard fifteen units of college entrance requirements. Students who have pursued technical, commercial or agricultural subjects which are not acceptable as entrance units may take examinations in the subjects in which they are unable to present the required credits. The Matthew Fontaine Maury Scholarship: Awarded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to a student of exceptional character and scholarship and established Confederate lineage. This scholarship covers tuition and is awarded for four years unless the appointee fails to maintain the required standards. The Clifton C. Roehle Scholarship: The income of six thousand dollars, the bequest of Mrs. Anna M. D. Roehle, awarded annually in memory of her son, Clifton C. Roehle. State Scholarships: To one student from each county of Maryland, and four students from Baltimore City, a "Senatorial scholarship," providing free tuition, board and room rent. W., F., and T., Th., S., Gymnasium. · Credit, 1 hour St. John's College aims to develop in its students a sense of responsibility to the community as well .as high standards of scholarship. To this end student self-government is encouraged, and the Student Council deals with many questions of student control. Any undergraduate who is unable to cooperate in maintaining these standards may be dismissed from: the college. Honor Regulations: Any reported violation of honor in college work is dealt with by a joint committee of the faculty and the students, which imposes the maximum penalty of dismissal from college in case of the conviction of a Senior, Junior or Sophomore; and of suspension for six months in the case of a Freshman, for the first offense, and of dismissal for the second offense. Amount of Work Permitted: A Freshman may carry a maximum of 18 credits of work with the exception of the pre-medical course where 20 credits will be required. The maximum amount of work which upper classmen may carry is as follows: If an upper classman has an average in the preceding semester of C, he may be allowed to carry courses amounting to 22 credits. In no case may this amount of work be exceeded. The minimum amount of work which a student may carry is 13 credits, including Physical Education. Examinations: Informal examinations of all classes are held at the end of each mid-semester period. The regular semester examinations are held about February 1 and at the end of the college year. Reports: Reports are sent to parents after the midsemester and semester examination and also to the faculty advisers. Marks: The scale of marks is as follows: A, excellent; B, very good; C, fair; D, passing; E, condition; F, failure; I, incomplete. zero. Three tardy marks will be recorded as one unexcused absence. Continued absence in any course will be reported to the Dean for his action. Students taking three unexcused absences from a three-hour course or five unexcused absences from a five hour course will be dropped from the course. Unexcused absences immediately before or following a holiday will count double. Any student who receives an E in the first semester examinations is allowed a re-examination within two weeks. Any student who receives an E in second semester examinations is allowed a re-examination in September, as indicated on the College Calendar. Any student who receives an F in a semester examination must drop the subject in which he has received this grade. If this subject is required in his course, he must take it over again the next time it is given. Change of Courses: No student may drop a course without the consent of his faculty adviser, the instructor givin·g the course, and the Dean. No student may register for a new course after Registration Day, except with the permission of the Dean. Exclusion from College: Any student who in the semester examinations has received an F in two courses, or failed to pass nine hours' work, or, at the end of the year has failed to pass sufficient work to continue with his class, may be dropped from the college. Before being so dropped, the student will be given a hearing before the Scholarship Committee of the faculty. Furthermore, the college reserves the right to exclude at any time students whose conduct or academic standing it regards as undesirable, and without assigning any further reason therefor; in such cases, the fees due or which may have been paid in advance to the college will not be refunded or remitted, in whole or in part, and neither the college nor any of its officers shall be under any liability whatsoever for such exclusion. Election of Courses by Upper-Classmen: Every student of the Junior, Sophomore and Freshman classes is required to submit to the Dean during the last week of May the studies he proposes to take during the next college year, with the signed approval of his adviser. A fee of two dollars will be required of anyone indicating his choice of courses later than that date. Advisers: On October 15th each Freshman will leave at the office of the Dean the names of members of the faculty whom he prefers to have for adviser, in order of preference. At the end of his first year each student will designate his major subject, and will be assigned a professor in that subject as his adviser for the rest of his college course. Assignment of advisers will be made-as far as possible in ' accordance with the student's preference. Illness: All cases of illness must be reported promptly to the college physician. Students suffering from contagious or infectious diseases must reside in the infirmary for the period of their illness. The college physician maintains regular daily hours at the infirmary at which time his services are available without extra charge. The student medical fee covers cases of illness which can be treated at the college. Attendance at Classes: Attendance is required at all classes. Absences are excused by the Dean only in case of illness reported by the college physician, or unavoidable necessity. Every unexcused absence will be recorded as 57 Late Registration: A fine of $5.00 in addition to other fees will be assessed against all students who fail to register on Registration Day. ! Local associations are organized throughout the country. Student Activities The college encourages students to take part in activities outside the curriculum. New student organizations must receive the approval of the Student Council and the approval of the Social Activities Committee. The principal organizations through which these activities are carried on follow : Student Council: In matters not related to the curriculum the college grants the students a large measure of selfgovernment. All questions arising under this arrangement are referred to the Student Council. Particularly this council has supervision over questions of student conduct. It meets weekly. Rose- Varsity schedules are played in football~ basketball, lacrosse, baseball, track and tennis. The students also engage in boxing, fencing, and wrestling although no intercollegiate schedule is maintained. Two improved athletic fields provide facilities for outdoor athletics. 1 II I I Indoor sports are held in a new and well-equipped gymnasium. All college students maintaining the necessary scholastic average are permitted to engage in varsity sports. Publications : The members of the Junior Class publish a year-book, The Rat-Tat. The Collegian, a newspaper published by the undergraduates, appears regularly once a week and in occasional special numbers. The student publications are free of faculty supervision. An alumni bulletin is published twice a year. Fraternities: The Delta Omicron Society, limited to members of the Junior and Senior classes, elects each year a few men distinguished for their qualities of character and leadership. Two national fraternities, Phi Kappa Sigma and Kappa Alpha (Southern) and one local fraternity, Phi Delta Sigma, have houses on the campus. About a third of the students are fraternity men. Dramatics: "English 49-50," a course in play production, will present at least two plays a year. It is open to all undergraduates. Orchestra: The students maintain both a symphony orchestra and a dance orchestra, each under its own director. The dance orchestra, "The Collegians," plays at college functions and performs at out-of-town engagements in the interest of the college.
