Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1989-1990
Image and Word
September 15 – October 31, 1989
An exploration of the visual artifact in its relation to the written text, Image and Word,
examines the differences and the similarities between these two modes. Works by Goya,
Rembrandt, Dürer, Blake, Rouault, and others on loan to the Mitchell Art Gallery from the
National Gallery of Art, the Hirshhorn, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Walters Art
Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Felrath Hines, Painting & Nick Ward, Sculpture
November 12 – December 14, 1989
An exhibition of non-objective art, or art without recognizable subject matter, in that
respect the antithesis of Image and Word. The paintings of Felrath Hines are rhythmic
asymmetrical arrangements of geometric shapes; his palette of vibrant pastels gives his
work a motile and lyric quality. The welded steel sculpture of Nick Ward has a linear
character, spare and dynamic, implying both optical and psychological motion.
Twentieth Century Sculpture
January 15 – February 22, 1990
Organized by the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University, Twentieth
Century Sculpture includes thirty-two sculptures that embrace a wide variety of styles from
realism to abstraction by important sculptors of this century. Works by Rodin, Archipenko,
Marcks, Trova, Maillol, and others. The only exhibition of this notable collection to be
viewed on the East Coast.
A Decade of British and American Screenprints: 1967-1977
March 18 – April 18, 1990
The flat intensity and bold color of screenprinting made it a favored medium during the
Sixties and Seventies. This exhibition’s scope reaches from the deliberately nonsensical to
the insistently intellectual, from the charming to the provocative with works from Roy
Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Louise Nevelson, Will Barnet, and others.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
April 20 – May 13, 1990
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1991-1992
Secessionism and Austrian Graphic Arts 1900-1920 from the Collection of the
Neue Galerie der Stadt, Linz
August 31 – October 27, 1991
One of the most influential movements in modern art was led by a group of Austrian artists
known as the Secessionists. Their concern was to bring Austrian artists into contact with
the latest developments in the art world outside of Austria, and, at home, to persistently
challenge the conventions, social as well as artistic, of their time. This exhibition of prints,
drawings and watercolors from the Neue Galerie der Stadt in Linz, Austria, includes works
by Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Alfred Kubin and Gustav Klimt.
International Miniature Print Biennial
November 7 – December 15, 1991
Organized as a competition to invite artists to work in a space that did not exceed 4 square
inches, this exhibition of 146 miniature prints includes work by artists from 21 countries
and 21 states. The show powerfully illustrates the concept that “less can be more”.
Old Master Drawings from the Collection of the University Art Museum,
Santa Barbara
January 17 – February 28, 1992
An exhibition of seventy old mast drawings from Helen Lundeberg and Lorser Feitelson’s
collection in the University Art Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara.
Containing primarily Italian master drawings, this distinctive exhibition of bold and
strongly calligraphic works spans the Sixteenth through Nineteenth centuries. Included
are works by artists such as Luca Cambiaso, Domenico Campagnola, Palma Giovane, Luca
Giordano, Giovanni Battista, Annibale Carracci and Giambattista Tiepolo.
Henry Moore: The Last Portfolio
March 18 – April 26, 1992
Organized by the Council for Creative Projects, this exhibition consists of 38 etchings that
represent Henry Moore’s (1898-1986) Mother and Child series, the last major graphic
project the artist undertook. In addition to etchings, the show includes sculptures from
Moore’s early career which portray the image of the family bond as well. The artist’s
exploration of the mother and child theme in drawings, etchings and sculptures, reflects his
consistency in reaching beyond the theme of mother and child and his continuous inquiry
into birth, growth and the nature of creativity.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
May 3 – May 17, 1992
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1993-1994
The Eye of the Collector: Ludwig and Rosy Rishcher and the Rise of German
Expressionist Art
August 25 – October 24, 1993
During the first two decades of the 20th century, German artists infused their art with
humanity and spirituality which had disappeared amid the Industrial Revolution; their
avant-garde became known as Expressionism. Ludwig and Rosy Fischer formed a
significant collection of Expressionist art created by young, radical painters and sculptors,
some of whom were to become the giants of German Expressionism: Ernst Ludwig
Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann.
Prints by the Nabis: Vuillard and His Contemporaries
October 29 – December 12, 1993
In late nineteenth century Paris under the auspice of Gauguin a group of artists calling
themselves the Nabis were drawn together by the belief that art should convey feelings and
ideas instead of verisimilitude. These prophets set out to play upon the inspirational
qualities of art choosing color lithography as their medium. This exhibition from the
Brooklyn Museum and the American Federation of Arts offers a rich collection of warm,
charming and highly textured prints by Vuillard, Bonnard, Vallotton, Roussel and others.
The Artist as Social Commentator: Prints by Honoré Daumier
January 4 – February 27, 1994
In a span of four decades, Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) produced over 4,000 satirical prints
which expressed the ideals of the French Republic during a period of great economic change
and political unrest. His mature lithographs show an expressive freedom of line and an
ability to reveal a great deal with only the essentials of subject and form. Forty-six of these
lithographs were donated to the Art Gallery of the University of New Hampshire in 1961;
this is the first time they will be shown as a group outside of New England.
Gaston Lachaise: Sculpture and Drawings
March 18 – April 24, 1994
Celebrated among the first generation of modern American sculptors, Gaston Lachaise
(1882-1935) is best known for his interpretations in bronze of the female figure. These
powerful sculptures echo his interest in the figure as a symbol of womanhood. This
exhibition of 45 sculptures also includes 20 of Lachaise’s drawings, which offer interesting
contrasts to the female figure.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
May 1 – 15, 1994
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1994-1995
Rembrandt Etchings: Selections from the Carnegie Museum of Art
September 23 – November 20, 1994
Between 1628 and 1665, Rembrandt (1606-1669) produced over 200 etchings, 50 of which
will be shown in this exhibition. Among the most renowned are, The Hundred Guilder
Print, The Three Crosses, The Three Trees, The Goldweigher’s Field and The Great Jewish
Bride. This collection shows a comprehensive view of the evolution of Rembrandt’s
printmaking and is divided into four major iconographical themes — portraiture,
landscape, biblical and genre scenes — that demonstrate the artist’s ability to capture
psychological drama and his bold experimentation with light and shadow. The exhibition is
organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
The Photographic Art: Amish, Wildlife and the Chesapeake
November 29 – December 15, 1994
Pennsylvania photographer and author Lucian Niemeyer’s artistic camerawork and
magnificent color photographs are the subject of this exhibition which includes photographs
from his three books, Old Order Amish, Long Legged Wading Birds and Chesapeake
Country.
The Etchings and Drypoints of James Abbott McNeill Whistler
January 10 – March 3, 1995
During the latter half of the nineteenth century, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (18341903) played a central role in refining printmaking and reviving etching in England and
throughout Europe. While his paintings were often subject to harsh criticism, his drypoints
and etchings gained him the reputation as the most important etcher since Rembrandt.
This exhibit of 40 images, portraying scenes of daily life, traces Whistler’s development
through his move from France to England and trips to Venice. Included in this exhibition
from the Syracuse University Art Collection are Whistler’s printed portfolio of Sixteen
Etchings of the Thames and his now famous Nocturnes.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
March 20 – April 3, 1995
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
Masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque Printmaking
April 7 – May 21, 1995
This exhibition provides an overview of the considerable changes printmaking underwent
in Europe from its beginnings in the Fifteenth century spanning its development through to
the Seventeenth century. These 85 superb prints illustrate the differences between art as
practiced in the North and in Italy. They also portray the technical advances, influences
and stylistic changes experienced within printmaking between and in both artistic regions.
Among the artists included in this exhibition from the Bayly Art Museum of the University
of Virginia are: Albrecht Altdorfer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Dürer, Rembrandt, Anthony
van Dyck, Annibale, Claude Le Lorrain, Stefano Della Bella and Jacques Callot.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1995-1996
Japanese Woodblock Prints: The Ukiyo-e Tradition
August 30 – October 20, 1995
This exhibit, a collection of 67 woodblock prints from the Dayton Art Institute collection,
represents a movement among Japanese artists of the Edo period (1603-1867). The ukiyo-e
(“pictures of the Floating world”) tradition, with its vibrant use of color and dynamic
composition has profoundly influenced Western artists since 1853. These bold and unusual
paintings depict the milieu of the plebian class, a stark contrast to the traditional courtly
art of the time.
Herman Maril: Search for the Essence
October 27 – December 14, 1995
Herman Maril (1908-1986) is considered by many to be both a poet and a painter. In this
exhibition of 45 paintings and drawings, guest curator David Scott selects work that
reflects Maril’s gently philosophic outlook toward life. Maril’s compositions appear to be
deceptively simple and effortless, yet in detail they convey a strong sense of pictorial space.
His use of color is inventive, expressive and functional in pattern as well as in depth.
Maril’s work is included in the collections of museums, galleries and private collections
throughout the U.S. and Europe.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
January 23 – February 6, 1996
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
White Mountain Painters 1834-1926
February 16 – March 30, 1996
The grandeur of the White Mountains of New Hampshire was a source of great inspiration
for European colonists of the nineteenth century. The artists flocking to this area came to
be known as the White Mountain Painters. Plagued by the misconception that they were
merely making tourist souvenirs, talented artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Benjamin
Champney and John J. Enneking were often overlooked. The 52 paintings in this
exhibition reflect a love of nature and a reverence for the beauty that inspired such poets as
Whittier and Longfellow. This exhibition, organized by the Danforth Museum of Art,
provides the opportunity to explore these works by largely unrecognized artists.
Space & Place Mapmaking East and West
April 12 – June 16, 1996
Sheet maps, atlases, and scrolls make up this exhibition of 48 works that reflect the
traditions of Western and Chinese mapmaking. Such figures as Ptolemy, Ortelius,
Mercator, Saxton, Speed, the Blaeus, the Visschers and anonymous Chinese mapmakers
represent the history of cartography. The cartographic tradition in the West tended to
emphasize advancing technologies, mathematical techniques, and scientific theory.
Chinese maps show a different type of cartographic representation. These maps stay close
to visible surfaces and use pictorial representations to signify places, unlike Western maps
that reflect a bias toward theorizing, depth and the penetration of surfaces. All works in
the exhibition are on loan from the Library of Congress, the largest collection of maps and
atlases in the world, and from a private map collector.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1996-1997
Sculpture by Burton Blistein
July 3 – August 4, 1996
This exhibition includes approximately 35 pieces, primarily one-of-a-kind figurative
bronzes. All of the sculptures comment in some way upon the human condition, frequently
by incorporating allusions to myth and literature. Their meanings are interrelated and the
individual works form a larger, more comprehensive whole. The sculptures are part of a
continuing series that has occupied the artist, Burton Blistein, for many years.
Portrait of a College: Photographs by Warren & Eisenstaedt
August 28 – November 3, 1996
This exhibition consists of 41 photographs that reflect on the life of St. John’s College, the
aims of its founders, and the purpose of the academic program. Alfred Eisenstaedt shot the
photographs for the famous Life magazine article of 1940. M.E. Warren, an Annapolis
documentary photographer, recorded images of the college in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of
the photographs are examples of large-format photography, in vogue at the time. The
exhibit is organized by co-curators and St. John’s College students Alexander Bowles (A’97)
and Sloane McFarland (SF’95).
Lasting Impressions: Drawings by Thomas Hart Benton
November 7 – December 15, 1996
Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was an observer: his curiosity about people and
mechanisms led him to study each of his subjects with intensity. Benton’s drawings, as a
result, are marked by a distinct blend of exaggeration and precision. The 68 works in this
exhibition, on loan from Lyman Field and the United Missouri Bank of Kansas City, are
some of the 1,900 drawings found in Benton’s studio at the time of his death. These
drawings, dating from as early as 1901 and as late of 1970, range from studies of city-folk to
landscapes. Each drawing reflects Benton’s desire to create works of art that engage and
entertain ordinary people. Benton’s drawings take the viewer on a fascinating journey
through 20th century America.
Red Grooms: What’s All the Ruckus About?
January 7 – February 8, 1997
Best known for his larger than life pictosculptoramas, contemporary artist Red Grooms can
be called an innovator with a sense of humor. Grooms’ international renown as a painter,
printmaker, sculptor, and filmmaker comes from his playful efforts to deflate the hot air of
“high art.” This exhibition of 44 works organized by the Cheekwood Tennessee Museum of
Art & Botanical Gardens is the first comprehensive exhibit of Grooms’ vibrant watercolors.
These paintings appeal to a wide audience and include city scenes, self-portraits, and
intimate views of the artist’s family and friends.
The Figure in 20th Century Sculpture
February 21 – April 13, 1997
There is nothing so compelling to artists as the human form. This exhibition, 50 sculptures
from the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, explores contemporary interpretations of the
figure. Sculptors such as Rodin, Lipschitz, Lachaise, Calder, Arp, and Baskin demonstrate
the transition from the romantic figure to the abstract. Each of these powerful works
represents a step in the artist’s journey to understand himself.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1997-1998
Nancy Graves: Excavations in Print, 1972-1992
August 28 – November 1, 1997
Archaeology, astronomy, botany, cartography, paleontology, and zoology served as just a
few of the sources of inspiration for contemporary artist Nancy Graves (1940-1995).
Graves, best known for her painting and sculpture, liked to explore the patterns in nature
and history through her work. Nancy Graves: Excavations in Print, 1972-1992, is the first
comprehensive exhibition of Graves’s lesser-known printmaking talents. Each of the prints
in this exhibition has a relationship to the entire body of her work; Graves often recycled
images from her older prints, translating them into a new form. Using different methods of
abstraction, Graves transformed what she called “shards of art” into a new artistic vision.
South Sea Impressions: Two Artists’ Views of WWII
November 7 – December 12, 1997
The December 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II
and launched the Pacific campaign. In 1944, artist Jason Schoener, a newly commissioned
Naval Officer, found himself stationed on Eniwetok Atoll, a small island in the South
Pacific. A keen observer, Schoener captured the dramatic colors and shapes of the island,
producing over a hundred watercolor paintings and sketches in his eighteen-month stay.
The following year brought another artistic Naval Officer to the South Pacific. Donald
McBride painted scenes depicting the island of Peleliu as it recovered from battle. During
his time on Peleliu, McBride also developed Lively the Lizard, an allegorical children’s story
illustrating the rise and fall of the Japanese Empire.
This exhibition, guest curated by James W. Cheevers, Senior Curator at the United States
Naval Academy Museum, and on loan from Donald McBride and the United States Naval
Academy, provides a spectacular insider’s view of the beauty and tumult of the South
Pacific during World War II.
From Earth & Soul: The Evans Collection of Asian Ceramics
January 7 – February 25, 1998
Organized by the University Art Gallery at the California State University, San
Bernardino, this collection from the major ceramic centers of East Asia including China,
Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand spans the 6th to the 19th centuries. The ceramicmaking traditions of different time periods and regions is examined and contrasted. Each
carefully crafted clay vessel reflects the unique Asian appreciation and high regard for
ceramics. These pieces are more than functional pots and jars; Asian potters concerned
themselves with the color, proportion, and the shape of their work. In viewing these
ceramics, we can see the beauty that captivated Chinese emperors, Japanese tea masters,
and Western explorers alike.
Reflections on Nature: Small Paintings by Arthur Dove, 1942-43
March 6 – April 25, 1998
This exhibition, on loan from the Wichita Art Museum, provides an intimate glimpse at the
paintings of Arthur Dove (1880-1946), a pioneer of American abstract expressionism. Dove
was an experimenter, using unconventional media and techniques to produce works that
captured the essence or “condition of light” of his subjects. The 28 mixed-media works in
this exhibition are tiny; each of them measures approximately seven by six inches in size.
This small format invites careful examination of the artistic style that laid the groundwork
for other American abstract expressionists.
In Celebration of Whitbread: The Trumpy Wooden Wherry
April 26 – May 2, 1998
Designed by Mitchell Gallery Exhibit Preparator Sigrid Trumpy, this 14-foot wherry is
based upon the 1939 design by her grandfather, yacht builder John Trumpy.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
May 3 – 17, 1998
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1998-1999
The Sculptor’s Line: Henry Moore Prints and Maquettes
August 28 - October 10, 1998
The British artist Henry Moore (1898-1986), best known for his anthropomorphic abstract
sculpture, was also an accomplished draftsman and printmaker. This exhibition from the
William S. Fairfield Collection and organized by the Elvehjem Museum of Art, University of
Wisconsin, features 27 prints and 5 maquettes that reflect motifs relating to his sculpture.
Moore’s fascination with the human figure as a motif is evident throughout his career as a
printmaker, but his works on paper also explore other motifs in the natural world, from the
complex architecture of an elephant skull to the artist’s own time-worn hands.
American Prints 1925-1945
October 20 - December 12, 1998
This exhibition, a collection of 50 prints from the Syracuse University Art Collection,
portrays American rural and urban life from the Roaring Twenties to World War II. Prints
by Regionalist artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steuart Curry
depict scenes from rural America in an attempt to establish a native pictorial style. At the
same time, the Urban Realists, a group of artists including Reginald Marsh, Isabel Bishop,
and Martin Lewis, captured in their graphic work the dynamism of the American city,
especially New York with its fast -growing and diverse population.
Georges Rouault: Cirque de L’Étoile Filante
January 6 - February 26, 1999
Georges Rouault (1871-1958) had a life-long fascination for the circus arising from his
childhood memories in Paris. In Cirque de L’ Étoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Star),
he brings to life scenes from the circus in a series of color etchings, aquatint, and wood
engravings. The illustrations resulted from Rouault’s collaboration with Ambroise Vollard,
the Parisian publisher and art dealer. Considered one of the most productive collaborative
efforts in the history of printmaking, Rouault and Vollard published, among others, the
Miserere, Les Fleurs du Mal, Les Réincarnations du Pere Ubu, and Cirque de L’ Étoile
Filante. The form, color and harmony that Rouault found in the circus are vibrantly
expressed in these works.
Sunlight & Shadow: American Impressionism, 1885-1945
March 9 - April 23, 1999
Selected from a private collection and organized by the Fuller Museum of Art in Brockton,
Massachusetts, this exhibition features 78 works in oil, watercolor, and pastel. The
American Impressionists featured in the exhibition sought to square off intense color
oppositions, creating an exuberant and immediate sense of color and light in the American
landscape. The ever-changing conditions of the sky and sunlight offered landscapists the
opportunity to capture the quality of light and colors of the four seasons. Still life and
portrait paintings are also included in this exhibition.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
May 2 – 16, 1999
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
E. Barrett Prettyman, Jr., Collection of Signed and Inscribed Books
June 4, 5 and 6, 1999
This important collection of books will be on display in the Mitchell Gallery in conjunction
with the St. John’s College Book Fair sponsored by the Friends of St. John’s College. The
collection includes books signed or inscribed by Presidents, Supreme Court Justices,
winners of the Nobel Prize, notable historical figures such as Albert Einstein, Amelia
Earhart, Hellen Keller, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Charles Lindbergh, as well as major
figures involved in Watergate. In addition, many great American and English literary
writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries works such as Albert Camus, Charles
Dickens, T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Hardy, Ernest
Hemingway, Jack London, Flannery O’Connor, Thomas Pynchon, Ayn Rand, J.D. Salinger,
John Steinbeck, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dylan Thomas, and Mark Twain are included in
this collection.
The Fine Art of Craft: National Craft Show of Maryland
June 24 – July 25, 1999
Selected by Kenneth Trapp, curator-in-charge at the Renwick Gallery of the National
Museum of American Art, this national juried craft show includes furniture, ceramics,
metalwork, jewelry, textiles, books and other crafts produced by artists across America.
The Maryland Federation of Art, The League of Maryland Craftsmen, and The Mitchell
Gallery collaborated on the exhibition.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 1999-2000
Maryland Hall Artist-in-Residence Exhibition
August 24 – September 5, 1999
Exhibition that features the work of Maryland Hall artists-in-residence: Bonnie Roth
Anderson, Phyllis Avedon, Josephine Beebe, Dan Beigel, Lee Boynton, Don Elliott, Moe
Hanson, Steve Hustvedt, Jeanne Keck, Emily Kutler, and Andrea Olney Wall.
The Printed World of Pieter Bruegel the Elder
September 16 – November 7, 1999
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1527/28-1569) is among the most celebrated artists of the 16th
century. Although he etched only one of the prints in this exhibition, many of his paintings
and drawings were transferred into print by famous engravers and etchers during his
lifetime. Exploring Bruegel’s rich and varied imagery, this selection of 65 prints examines
his widespread influence on artists of his day. Among the rare prints included in this
exhibition is The Rabbit Hunt (1560), an etching by Bruegel himself. Prints after his works
include Alpine landscapes, seascapes, depictions of peasantry, allegories and satires, and
reverent interpretation of the Scriptures. This group of prints was selected from a private
collection by Barbara Butts, curator of prints and drawings at The Saint Louis Art
Museum, and is circulated by The American Federation of Arts.
Ancient Views and Maps of the Holy Land
November 14 - December 15, 1999
This exhibition includes approximately 74 original antique maps, atlases, portraits, and
prayer books created between 1482 and 1905. Each item is related to the geography of the
Holy Land-Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and eastern Egypt. These maps – which
combine the technical expertise of the surveyor with the artistic gifts and dexterity of the
engraver- serve as depictions of the history and geography of the Bible.
The Phelan Collection of Western Art
January 11 - February 18, 2000
This collection of Western art is a vivid and expressive representation of man’s gradual
expansion into the American west. The 45 paintings, prints and drawings in the exhibit
embody both the beauty of the subjects and the prevailing spirit of manifest destiny. They
capture the heart and mind of an expanding nation. The exhibition focuses on three
themes: towns and settlements, the virgin wilderness, and the people who shaped the
frontier. These works from the Phelan Collection offer a fascinating view of the first 75
years of westward pioneering in America.
Chair Exhibition and Auction (Fundraiser)
February 24, 25, 26 and 27, 2000
Exhibition of chairs made by 25 local artists and artisans specifically for an auction to
benefit the Mitchell Gallery’s exhibition and educational outreach programs.
Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics from the Edward and Ann Weston
Collection
March 11 - April 21, 2000
The 63 limited edition ceramics in this exhibition were created by Pablo Picasso during the
years he worked at the Madoura pottery workshop of Georges and Suzanne Ramie, from
1947 to 1971. Organized by Landau Travelling Exhibitions, this collection features dishes,
plates, bowls, vases, vessels, pitchers, and plaques.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2000-2001
Ship to Shore: Marine Paintings from the Butler Institute of American Art
August 23 – October 15, 2000
This exhibition from the permanent collection of The Butler Institute of American Art in
Youngstown, Ohio, spans 200 years (19th and 20th centuries) of historical ship portraiture
and seascape painting. Depicting the glory and fear, and the romance and peace of man’s
encounters with the sea, the exhibition captures this general fascination with marine
culture. Gifford Beal, Thomas Hart Benton, William Glackens, George Grosz and Reginald
Marsh are some of the artists represented in this exhibition of American marine art.
Works by Warhol from the Cochran Collection
October 25 – December 14, 2000
Considered a major figure in the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is also
recognized as a filmmaker, collector, music producer, author, magazine publisher, and
commercial designer and illustrator. Included in this exhibition of 23 works is a rare and
complete set of Warhol’s silkscreen series Cowboys and Indians (1986). The exhibition is
organized by Smith Kramer Fine Art Services and on loan from the Wes and Missy Cochran
Collection.
American Landscapes from the Paine Art Center and Gardens
January 9 – February 23, 2001
In a time of increasing modernist influences in art, these works on loan from the Paine Art
Center and Gardens in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, represent the relationship between nature and
the individual artist. This stylistically eclectic collection of 47 paintings and prints
celebrates nature in its varying moods: from the Hudson River School-influenced work of
James McDougal Hart to the Midwest-themed lithographs of Grant Wood; from the misty
landscapes of George Inness to the sunlit scenes of Maurice Braun; and from the visionary
canvases of Ralph Blakelock to the impasto pigments of John Costigan.
Worldviews: Maya Ceramics from the Palmer Collection
March 7 – April 20, 2001
The 56 ceramics, jade, and stone pieces in this exhibit, generally produced by Maya scribes
and artisans during the Classic Period (A.D. 250-900), contain a wealth of information
about Maya ideology – religion, beliefs, and cosmic concerns. Classic Maya civilization
existed in southwestern Mexico, the Yucatán Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, Western
Honduras, and western El Salvador. Painted cylindrical vases, figurines, funerary urns,
pendants, and bowls are a few of the artifacts representing Maya civilization in this exhibit
on loan from the Hudson Museum’s Palmer Collection at the University of Maine.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
April 29 – May 13, 2001
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
It All Began Here in Annapolis: An Exhibit on Thoroughbred Racing in
Colonial Maryland
May 16-27, 2001
Curated and organized by Alderman Ellen O. Moyer, this exhibition features paintings,
trophies, letters advertisements, and other memorabilia from Maryland’s golden age of
racing.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2001-2002
A Retrospective Vision: The Photography of Marion E. Warren, 1939-1999
August 21 – September 12, 2001
Born in 1920 and raised in Missouri, Marion E. Warren moved to Annapolis in 1947. This
exhibition of 60 significant black and white photographs is the first major retrospective of
Warren’s work. It represents 60 years of his career and is a visual journal of Maryland that
is divided into four categories: the Chesapeake Bay, architecture and industry, landscape,
and people.
Of Samurai and Chrysanthemums: Edo Period Woodblock Prints and Meiji
Period Sculptures
September 21 – November 9, 2001
The Edo Period (1615-1867) was a time of peace and economic growth in Japan and a period
in which the fine arts flourished. This exhibition features 55 woodblock prints from the Edo
Period by such renowned artists as Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni II, and Hiroshige. The prints
portray images of popular subjects from everyday life such as Kabuki theater actors,
historical events, heroes and villains, and the landscape. The vigorous and bold
draftsmanship, combined with the use of dramatic and vibrant colors, creates an aesthetic
that is strikingly different from that of Western art. In addition to the prints, the
exhibition includes nine bronze sculptures from the Meiji Period (1868-1912) that reflect a
style of training in both Western techniques and Japanese traditions.
Josef Albers: Formuation: Articulation
November 14 – December 13, 2001
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists and
articulate color theorists. He studied and taught at the legendary Bauhaus School of Art,
until it was closed by the Nazis in 1933. Albers moved to America and taught at Black
Mountain College, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1939. From 1950-1959 he was the head of the
Department of Design at Yale University.
Formulation: Articulation is an overview of Albers’ lifetime oeuvre. Produced in silkscreen
under his supervision by Ives-Stillman, the compilation of prints was published in 1972 by
Harry N. Abrams. This exhibition consists of 66 silkscreen prints and conveys Albers’ belief
in the importance of color as the primary component of art.
James McNeill Whistler Lithographs from the Collection of Steven Block
January 16 – February 27, 2002
James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) began exploring the art of lithography late in his
career after having already established himself as a painter and an etcher. Inspired by the
1887 revival of lithography in Paris by such artists as Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre
Bonnard, Whistler produced delicate and shimmering prints. Scholars often regard
Whistler’s lithographs, the last medium explored by the artist, as his ultimate and most
abstract personal expression in art. This exhibition also includes a number of Whistler’s
very rare colored lithographs among the 86 prints on display.
The New York School and Beyond: Paintings from the Art Enterprises,
Limited Collection
March 8 – April 20, 2002
The New York School was the origin of a great movement in the history of Modern Art.
Artists working in the New York School in the 1940s and 1950s shifted the center of visual
art from Europe to the United States through their highly innovative art, which is known
as Abstract Expressionism. Although the New York School was not defined by one
particular style, these artists shared an attitude. Artists such as Robert Motherwell, Franz
Kline, Jackson Pollock, Hans Hofmann, Jules Olitski, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell and Sam
Francis all had a strong desire to create art that was personal and self-revelatory while at
the same time evoking the timelessness of human emotions and beliefs.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
April 28 – May 12, 2002
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2002-2003
The Sweet Uses of Adversity: Images of the Biblical Job
August – October 2002
The Book of Job from the Hebrew Bible is the seminal work in literature which addresses
innocent human suffering. Throughout history, Job, the man from Uz, has been the icon of
patience and endurance. Consequently, artistic interpretations of Job’s personal struggles
provide a wide range of commentary on society and the human condition.
Curated by Lucinda Edinberg and Stephen Vicchio, this exhibition of over 45 prints,
drawings, paintings and sculptures, range in scope from a 13th century Byzantine psalter
to paintings by the 20th century social realist Ben Shahn. Also included are works by
Augustin Hirschvogel, Maerten van Heemskerck, Giuseppe Mitelli, Lucas Vosterman,
William Blake, James Tissot, Alphonse Legros, Benton Spruance and Fritz Eichenberg.
Some of the lending institutions for this exhibition are the National Gallery of Art, the
Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Amon Carter Museum, the
Baltimore Museum of Art, and private collections.
The Human Factor: Figuration in American Art 1950-1995
November – December 2002
Until the Abstract Expressionist movement, the human figure had been a dominant subject
in Western art. However, in the development of modern art, the image of man has been
transformed, distorted and has almost disappeared as a subject. Yet, the last quarter of the
20th century has witnessed a return to the human figure by many contemporary artists as
a valid subject and an important vehicle for self-discovery and self-definition.
Stylistically the works in this exhibition range from the painterly tradition of Alice Neel’s
portraiture to Fairfield Porter’s domestic interiors, the studio of Philip Pearlstein, and the
Bay-area figuration of Richard Diebenkorn and Manuel Neri. Also included are the “pop”
images of George Segal, the graffiti images of Keith Haring, and the more recent contentcharged figuration of Susan Rothenberg and Eric Fischl. The exhibit features 50 paintings,
sculptures, prints and drawings from the Sheldon Art Memorial Gallery, University of
Nebraska-Lincoln.
Milton Avery Revisited: Works from the Louis and Annette Kaufman
Collection
January – March 2003
This exhibition of nineteen paintings, three drawings, and six prints from the private
collection of Louis and Annette Kaufman is organized by the Joe and Emily Lowe Art
Gallery at Syracuse University. Internationally acclaimed violinist Louis Kaufman and his
wife Annette were long-time personal friends of Milton Avery’s and collected some of his
earliest paintings while living in New York City.
The works in this exhibition span nearly two decades of Milton Avery’s early career.
Several still-life paintings illustrate Avery’s interest in European Post-Impressionism and
Modernism. Later landscape paintings and portraits begin to show the artist’s growing
experimentation with simplifying forms and brightening colors. A group of self-portraits
describes both the development of Avery’s aesthetic and his growing sense of mortality.
Other portraits include images of the Avery’s wife, Sally, and his friends, the artists
Marsden Hartley and Chaim Gross.
Celebration of Life: Graphic Works by Alexander Calder
March – April 2003
American sculptor and painter Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is renowned as the inventor
of the mobile and often regarded as one of the founders of the Kinetic art movement. In
this exhibition of 40 works on loan from the Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, the
Baltimore Museum of Art, and a private collector, Calder proves his skill in the media of
lithography, wool and illustration.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
April 28 – May 12, 2003
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
Lillian Vanous Nutt Exhibition
May 22 – June 7, 2003
An exhibition of over 30 paintings and drawings by this Annapolis artist, featuring abstract
and representational works from the 1960s to the present.

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2003-2004
Out of the Shadows: The Paintings of Helen Torr, a Retrospective
September 2 - October 24, 2003
This traveling exhibition organized by the Heckscher Museum of Art presents the first
major retrospective of Helen Torr’s work since a memorial exhibition in 1972. Virtually
unrecognized in her lifetime, Torr (1886-1967) was a gifted modernist who liked to paint
nature at close range, favoring expressive curvilinear motion and evenly weighted
compositions over representational accuracy. The exhibition consists of 50 paintings,
drawings, and sketches created by Torr between 1924 and 1938 while living in Centerport,
Long Island. The work from this period, often considered Torr’s most productive years,
reflects the nautical existence, nature in indeterminate space, and companionship with her
husband, Arthur Dove. The exhibit also includes Dove’s works and photography by Alfred
Stieglitz.
Rembrandt: The Consummate Etcher and Other 17th Century Printmakers
October 31, 2003– February 20, 2004
On loan from the Syracuse University Art Collection, The Consummate Etcher brings
together the etchings of Rembrandt and 16 of his contemporaries. In the 17th century, book
production increased dramatically, establishing the importance of the fledgling art of
engraving. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was already well known as a painter by the
time he began the first of nearly 300 etchings in 1640. Techniques on surface
characteristics and improved design make these works unique, as the artists were directly
involved with the progression of their art through the printmaking process. This collection
of 40 engravings, inspired by the native lands and peoples of Northern Europe,
demonstrates the artists’ technical achievements and thematic range, through landscapes,
genre, portraits, and religious subjects.
Exotica: Plant Portraits from Around the World
February 29 – April 23, 2004
In the Age of Reason, the desire to learn about and record natural phenomena gave rise to
detailed depictions of flora and fauna. Sixty-one botanical prints on tour from the
Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia offer a glimpse of scientific study and art
combined, reflecting both the progression of science and innovations in printing and
coloring. These artists – some men of science in their own right – worked under the
auspices of a royal patron or enthusiastic subscribers, to catalogue the species of plant-life
and to illustrate natural histories.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
May 2 – May 16, 2004
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
Anne Arundel County Juried Exhibition
June 1 – 20, 2004
The Mitchell Gallery is pleased to present this all-county juried exhibition of artists living
in Anne Arundel County. The exhibition is juried by Wilford W. Scott, Head of Adult
Programs at the National Gallery of Art. Seventy-eight works created in diverse media
within the last two years will be displayed, featuring both two- and three-dimensional
artwork. (90 artists submitted 223 works; 63 artists and 79 works selected)

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2004-2005
Where the Water Meets the Land: Selected Works from the Phelan Collection
August 24 – September 10, 2004
America has always had a love affair with the sea, a fact well-understood by Washingtonarea art collector Jay Phelan. Phelan began to collect nautical paintings in the 1960s; his
collection ranges from ship portraits of the early 19th century to Connecticut Impressionist
works to representations of Depression-era industrial waterfronts.
The Mitchell Gallery will display 25 of the most notable pieces from this collection,
spanning the last 200 years of maritime art.
Louise Nevelson: Selections from the Farnsworth Art Museum
September 14 – October 30, 2004
Russian-born American artist Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is considered a pioneer of 20th
century art in both painting and sculpture. After many years of struggle she was recognized
in her lifetime as the “grand dame of contemporary sculpture.”
This exhibition presents 37 paintings, prints, sketches, sculptures, and collages and a
selection of pendants made by Nevelson from the Farnsworth Art Museum’s collection. It
traces the full span of the artist’s career, from her student days at the Art Students League
to her emergence as an artist of national stature.
The Book of Kings: Art, War, and the Morgan Library’s Medieval Picture
Bible
November 6 – December 19, 2004
In the mid-13th century King Louis IX of France, later canonized as Saint Louis,
commissioned a picture book of astonishing beauty, depicting stories from the Old
Testament. This manuscript came to be known as the “Crusader Bible,” a picture book of
remarkable power and beauty that is now in the collection of the Pierpont Morgan Library
in New York. Because this manuscript is so fragile, it was only on display at the Walters
Art Museum, the curating and originating museum for this extraordinary exhibition.
However, a superb facsimile was printed in Germany and pages from this manuscript will
be on display in this scholarly presentation.
Twenty objects from the Walters Museum’s Medieval and Islamic collection, including
armor, enamels, ceramics, textiles, and manuscripts from England, France, Italy, Germany,
and Iran, that correspond with those depicted in the Bible are included in this exhibit.
A Community of Artists: The Collection of the Provincetown Art Association
and Museum
January 16 – February 26, 2005
Provincetown, Massachusetts, the isolated fishing village perched 40 miles out to sea, was
coined the “Biggest Art Colony in the World” by the Boston Globe in 1918. Almost 87 years
later, Provincetown is still home to a wealth of artists, art lovers, and those who bask in the
clear light and natural landscape.
This exhibition from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum includes 80 works by
Avery, Hawthorne, Hofmann, Kline, Knaths, Maril, Motherwell, Rothschild, Tworkov, and
others. The Collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum began in 1915 and
continues today to represent the best of the area’s artists, and a record of the art
movements of the last century.
Heroes, Villains, and Mermaids: The Fantastical World of Ronald Markman
March 5 – April 22, 2005
Inspired by popular culture as a child in the Bronx, Ron Markman drew to the sounds of
Jack Benny, Fred Allen, and Charlie McCarthy on the radio. As a young boy he was
influenced by the power of color and costume and design of Broadway musicals, comic books
heroes such as Smokey Stover, Lil Abner and Krazy Kat, and in his teens he trained as a
cartoonist. Pursuing his BFA/MFA at Yale and studying under Josef Albers, Markman’s
early painting influences included Klee, Chagall, Miro, Calder, and eventually Claes
Oldenburg.
While in Italy in 1962 on a Fulbright scholarship, Markman conceived of the world of
Mukfa, a fantasy realm of unbridled absurdity that became the wellspring for his art over
the next four decades. Creating a country of his very own, complete with its own heroes,
villains and mermaids, newspapers, nightclubs, airline, and university (Yes U!), offered
Markman the freedom to be seriously silly. “In Mukfa, I was free to explore the limits of
the nonsensical, the absurd and the subversive. Lewis Carroll found his creativity in
Wonderland; in 1962, I found my way home to Mukfa.” Represented by the Terry
Dintenfass Gallery and in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Hirshhorn Collection, this exhibit of
Markman’s work promises to thoughtfully engage the viewer.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2005-2006
Magic, Myths, and Minerals: Chinese Jades from the Arthur M. Sackler
Gallery
August 27 – October 14, 2005
Animals – both real and mythological – play a central role in Chinese folklore and art. For
centuries, Chinese people have attributed symbolic significance to birds, horses, bears,
dragons, and many other creatures. Well aware of the power of these symbols, artists have
long used them to enliven their works. The Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sackler Gallery has a
large collection of centuries-old animal figurines, and 35 of the Sackler’s finest animal
carvings will be featured in this exhibition. The tiny figurines were created by skilled
artisans who painstakingly carved complex figures from colorful jade.
Mitchell Gallery Advisory Board Reflections Exhibition, Silent Auction &
Celebration
October 20 – 22, 2005
Reflections is a retrospective of the Mitchell Gallery’s 16 years at St. John’s College. Local
artists will display works evoking one of the past exhibitions, which have numbered close to
100 in all and have featured artists as varied as Rembrandt, Picasso, and Warhol. Sale of
the works will benefit the gallery’s exhibitions and education program.
Ben-Zion: In the Grip of the Five Senses
October 30 – December 15, 2005
Ben-Zion, a founding member of “The Ten,” a group of expressionist painters who stood
against the conservative academic painting in pre-war New York, celebrated his European
Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter and printmaker. Influenced by
Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben Zion
wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection
between man and the divine, and between man and earth.” This exhibition of Ben-Zion’s
metal and wood sculptures and accompanying paintings and graphic works will include
personal artifacts and antiquities that provided inspiration for his art and writings.
John Diebboll: The Art of the Piano “Solos at St. John’s College”
January 6 – February 4, 2006
NYC artist/architect John Diebboll has lyrically created a collection of extraordinary 21st
century art-case piano drawings. This exhibition will feature 35 of Mr. Diebboll’s colored
pencil drawings that find inspiration from such diverse subjects as George Gershwin,
Thelonious Monk, an Australian Shepherd dog, the operas "Porgy & Bess" and "Tristan and
Isolde." There will also be solo portraits of Cecelia Wyatt and Marylou Williams.
The Art of Music from the Baltimore Museum of Art
February 15 – April 9, 2006
In different cultures and times, artists have incorporated music in their art, resulting in
powerful expressions that blend the senses of sight and sound. This unity of the arts occurs
for several reasons, from conveying the artists’ beliefs about society and culture to
visualizing the look of sound in a two-dimensional format. The exhibition will showcase
over 40 works from the Baltimore Museum of Art’s collection, exploring the myriad ways
music and art unite and revealing much about the culture, place, and time of the artist’s
work.
St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition
April 22 - May 14, 2006
This annual exhibition affords members of the St. John’s College community an opportunity
to explore the visual arts. The result, a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, drawings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, and photographs, elegantly represents the artistic talent of the
community.
small to LARGE: Anne Arundel County Juried Exhibition
June 1 – 21, 2006

artists living in Anne Arundel County. The exhibition will be juried by a noted museum
professional from Washington or Baltimore. Works created in diverse media within the

Mitchell Gallery Exhibition Schedule 2006-2007
Living with Art: Early American Modernism from the Baker/Pisano
Collection of the Heckscher Museum of Art
August 25 – October 18, 2006
This exhibition of fifty paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and decorative arts from the
collection of Ronald G. Pisano and D. Frederick Baker was donated to the Heckscher
Museum of Art in Huntington, New York in memory of Mr. Pisano. He began the collection
in the early 1970’s before interest in early American Modernism was widespread. In his
introductory essay for the fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the exhibition, Baker
states, “The Collection also came to celebrate the interconnectedness of art and artists that
made up America’s early Modern art community. The period is one of the richest in terms
of fascinating personalities, turf-fighting, new and unexplored art directions, and a kind of
unbridled inventiveness.” The Baker/Pisano Collection charts the course of many of the
early proponents of Modernism, with paintings by such visionary artists as Arthur Dove,
John Marin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Max Weber.
Joan Miró: Illustrated Books
October 28 - December 15, 2006
Perhaps more so than any other modern artist, Catalan-born painter Joan Miró (1893-1983)
embraced the power and beauty of the illustrated book. The form became a vehicle of
expression for him; Miró completed over 250 titles of illustrated books in the course of his
lifetime. This exhibit includes a selection from twelve publications of individual book pages
accompanied by translations of passages from the corresponding texts. Miró’s love of
literature is expressed through bold colors and fantastic shapes that are both simple and
confounding, playing with the relationship of words and images. Some of his abstract
illustrations are for poems from authors such as William Butler Yeats, Tristan Tzara, and
others, evoking the spirit and rhythm of the poetry while offering his own interpretation of
the text.
Graphics by 20th Century Masters from the Cochran Collection
January 18 – February 24, 2007
More than 60 works by such recognized artists as Frankenthaler, Diebenkorn, Hockney,
Oldenburg, Rauschenberg, Rosenquist, Stella, Johns and many others, are included in this
exhibition from the Cochran Collection, one of the most significant private collections of
20th-century European and American graphics in the United States. The collection
presents a cross section of contemporary artists and printmaking techniques. Here among
works by Picasso and Chagall is an etching by sculptor Henry Moore, a mixed-media by
sculptor Louise Nevelson, and a lithograph by the mobile artist Alexander Calder. Wes and
Missy Cochran are dedicated art collectors and their exhibit documents the 20th-century
American social and cultural scene.
Richard Jolley: Sculptor of Glass from 1985 to the Present
March 8 – April 15, 2007
Best known for his figurative, yet abstract glass sculpture, Richard Jolley has explored the
use of different media, including bronze and works on paper, to express the portrait
narrative which remains an intrinsic aspect of his work. Noted art historian and critic,
Sam Hunter, compares Jolley’s work to Matisse and Rauschenberg in terms of integrity and
sheer resourcefulness. This exhibition is Jolley’s first retrospective and it surveys his
career in depth with 54 works from his private collection, including wall reliefs, busts, and
his Totem Series.

The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci
October 30 - December 15
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) made contributions of the highest magnitude to the
fundamental principles of mechanics. His insatiable curiosity about natural phenomenon
guided his explorations and inspired him to create the inventions that are actualized in this
exhibition of 16 models from The Exhibition Alliance. These models, built in the 1950s by
IBM Corporation technicians, bring Leonardo's visionary concepts of physics, mechanics,
and art to life. They offer insight onto the principles of inertia and the concepts Leonardo
used for his flying machines, spring-driven car, printing press, military tank, and other
mechanical devices and measuring tools that are in common use today, more than 500
years after he imagined them.

The Elegant Salon: European Academic Paintings from the Syracuse
University Art Collection
August 27 - October 10, 2008
In the late 19th century, avant-garde artists challenged theories about fine art that were
fundamental to the teachings of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Academy of
Unified Fine Arts in Vienna. Though the schools' teachings and theories fell out of favor,
their art was enthusiastically acquired by American museums and collectors. This
exhibition from the Syracuse University Art Collection includes the romantic works of
William Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Leon Gérôme, Conrad Kiesel, an artist often linked
with the Pre-Raphaelites, and the luminous palette of Rudolph Ernst and other European
artists whose works reflect the best of these ideals.

follow from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
